Ontario Provincial Police and the Office of the Fire Marshal are currently investigating a fatal fire that occurred in Stone Mills Township on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded shortly after 2 p.m. to a 911 call from a passerby that an outbuilding on a property on Bethel Road was on fire. At the scene, first responders found a “severely damaged” structure and the body of a deceased person in the debris of the building.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed, though Staff Sgt. Chris Watkins with the Lennox and Addington County OPP said police were “pretty confident” the person whose body was located in the fire was an “occupant of the property.”

OPP and Office of the Fire Marshal investigators remain at the scene on Bethel Road.

The road remains open to local traffic, but police are asking people to stay if possible away due to the number of emergency vehicles that remain on scene.
