SIU investigating after 18-year-old suffers life-threatening injuries in 401 overpass fall

The Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an 18-year-old female from Odessa fell from a Highway 401 overpass in Loyalist Township early Saturday morning.

Shortly after 3 a.m., officers with the Lennox and Addington detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of a distraught person on a highway overpass on Old Wilton Road in Odessa.

The 18-year-old was found on the bridge over the highway.

A news release from the OPP on Saturday morning said officers attempted to approach her, but “the person suffered life-threatening injuries after falling from the bridge.”

“She was transported to hospital for medical attention,” the news release stated.

OPP officers and investigators with the SIU closed the section of the highway eastbound between County Road 4 and County Road 6 until shortly after 9 a.m., when it reopened.

The SIU’s mandate is invoked whenever serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault arise in a situation involving Ontario police officers.

The investigation is ongoing.
