Napanee’s Brittany Benn and her Canadians rugby sevens teammates have qualified for the 2020 Toyko Olympics after taking the bronze medal in France on the weekend in the last stop of the 2018-19 HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series. Canada finished third as well in the rankings behind New Zealand and the United States.
In France, Canada beat Spain 22-19, Ireland 27-10 and Australia 27-14, and then topped France 12-5 in the quarter-finals.
After falling to New Zealand 21-12 in the semifinals, Canada beat Spain again in the bronze medal game, 19-14.
Benn was one of two Canadians to be named to the series Dream Team.
Pair of losses for Junior Gaels
Kingston’s Junior Gaels football teams dropped a pair of Ontario Provincial Football League games in London on Saturday to the host Junior Mustangs.
The Premier Varsity team lost 24-14 to the first-place Junior Mustangs, who improved to 5-1, while the Premier Junior Varsity Gaels dropped a 35-14 decision to the undefeated Mustangs.
Both Gaels teams are 1-5, with the varsity team sitting in ninth place and the junior varsity squad tied for ninth.
Both Gaels teams have a bye week next weekend. Their next home games will be Saturday, June 29, at Richardson Stadium. The junior varsity team is playing the Vaughan Rebels while the varsity team takes on the Guelph Jr. Gryphons.
