Both Junior Gaels football squads drop first games of season

Both Junior Gaels teams opened their Ontario Provincial Football League seasons with road losses in Ottawa over the weekend.

On Saturday, Kingston’s Junior Gaels Premier Varsity club dropped a tight 13-8 decision to the Ottawa Sooners at the Beckwith Township Recreation Complex.

Junior Gaels running back Braeden MacMicken rushed for 55 yards on 11 carries and Tegan Misuraca had two carries for 18 yards, including a 10-yard run for their only touchdown.

Through the air, the Junior Gaels completed only two passes for 15 yards and were the victim of five interceptions.

On Friday night in Kanata, the Junior Gaels lost 44-6 to the Sooners in Premier Junior Varsity action.

Cameron Wright’s fumble recovery in the Sooners’ end zone was all the scoring for the Junior Gaels could muster.

Quarterback Caden Stopchycki went 9-for-19 for 234 yards and Riley Sagriff caught six passes for 162 yards.

The Junior Gaels had trouble on the ground, gaining 13 yards on nine carries.

The Junior Gaels teams start the home portion of their schedules on Saturday with games against the Durham Dolphins at Richardson Stadium. The junior varsity game kicks off at 2:30 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 5 p.m.
